What is Hyper-Pigmentation?

 

Pigmentation (melanin) is what gives our skin its colour and it is also our biological sun protector.​

Hyper-pigmentation of the skin is caused by the abnormal or overactive production of melanin. The melanin is produced in the cells called melanocytes, for many reasons some melanocytes overproduce melanin, therefore causing irregular discolouration and dark spots.

Hyper-Pigmentation can be caused by:

Genetic tendencies​

Excessive sun exposure

Inflammation or trauma

Hormonal changes

Stress, natural ageing

nutrient deficiencies

Exposure to chemicals

Certain medication

Types of Hyper-Pigmentation?

 

Melasma

Also known as Chloasma and ‘pregnancy mask’. Men can also be affected, as well as users of oral contraceptives or hormonal replacement therapy (HRT)

Solar Lentigo

Oval or round spots found in 30 years plus and in lighter skins. Sometimes known as liver spots, sun spots or intense burn on one side of the face or hands caused whilst driving.​

​

Ephelidis (freckles)

Small, flat pigmented spots found on very fair skins with blond, red hair or children. These are harmless but can sometimes clump together over time. 

​

PIH (post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation)

The result of a skin lesion, trauma to the skin or the user of photo sensitising drugs, skin picker, post acne inflammation

Poikiloderma 

Found mainly on the neck and chest area. A chemical reaction to fragrance and deodorant made worst by UV rays
